		<description>Required by what?  It&#039;s part of &quot;moral rights&quot;, but that&#039;s not law everywhere.  And certainly mainstream literary and journalistic convention demands attribution.  But (as I understand it) the creator of something that has been released to the public domain doesn&#039;t have any legal authority outside of moral rights regimes to demand attribution.</description>

The point is to make it easy to share while encouraging and incentivizing others to do the same.  Requiring author notification raises the transaction cost too much.  The more of that that can be done automatically, though, the better.</description>
